Algorithms are provided by which the colony morphology, microscopic features, and direct spot tests provide for a same-day presumptive identification of each of the following agents: anthrax, cholera, brucellosis, plague, melioidosis, glanders, and tularemia, prerequisite to immediate referral of suspicious cultures to a reference laboratory for immediate confirmation.
