Worms, Wonders, and Woes

by Elmer Koneman, MD

Worms, Wonders and Woes is a parody of the journeys of 10 animal parasites following their wonders of cyclic existence between arthropods, flying insects, plant life, and carefully selected invertebrate and vertebrate animal hosts, viewed in parallel with human adventures, events and happenings, either real-life or fictional as recorded in the lay press and in classical literature, and the woes of the disease processes that result. As a bridge between philosophy and science, this narrative is intended to provide technical information on the activities of the parasites to lay readers with academic interests, and to broaden the horizons of professional parasitologists into the wider world of ecology and animal behavior. In the end, the reader will have experienced an entertaining grasp of the complex interplay between animal hosts, parasites, and humans, each in pursuit of its particular means of existence.

This journeys of these parasites will take the reader from the sheep-herding valleys in California to the Chicago shore of Lake Michigan during the Columbian Exhibition, and on explorations to the North Pole amid polar bears, and a twenty leagues under the sea journey with Captain Nemo, in consort with snails and Captain Hemo, in its various schistosomal forms. A visit will be made with Dr. Chaga in the rain forests of Brazil, and a ride in the DeHavilland Mosquito fighting aircraft in consort with its anophiline insect counterpart. The adventures of toxoplasma and Cats, strongyloides and hookworms in parallel with literary twins, and the journey of diphyllobothrium along with the saga of Odysseus will all be explored. The thread through all of this is to bring to consciousness the wonders and the woes of the worms.
