Microbiology Chief Medical Laboratory Scientist (Chief Tech)


Responsible for operational and technical management of the Microbiology section of the Clinical Laboratory at the University of Colorado Hospital, including bacteriology, mycology, mycobateriology, parasitology, and virology. Technical aspects of work performed within the section are complex and sophisticated. Complexity and acuity of patient care require current and advanced knowledge of laboratory medicine in Microbiology.


What’s on the horizon: The University of Colorado Hospital is undertaking an expansion that will phase in the addition of 300+ new beds, the first of which open in 2013. The Microbiology Chief Tech will manage this growth, from planning for future equipment needs to devising and implementing the staffing plan to gaining efficiencies in the work. In 2011, we will upgrade our current Cerner Classic to Cerner 015.


Management responsibilities: The Chief Technologist

· plans and organizes the operations of the Microbiology section,

· develops new procedures in conjunction with the Medical Director; oversees technical development of the section,

· maintains quality control and quality assurance of test systems; maintains accreditation standards,

· supervises and supports technical staff in performance of testing, and

· monitors conformance to the section budget; assists in budget preparation.


Working in the region’s only Academic Medical Center, you’ll have the chance to team up with the Microbiology Medical Director to evaluate new technologies and optimize testing.

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree. MT/MLS(ASCP) or categorical certification; prefer SM.
Minimum Experience: 4 years of related and management experience
